At Dents Mon Quartier, we offer, among our wide range of dental car, the design and milling of dental crowns. To do this, we rely in particular on CEREC technology, which makes it possible to carry out the entire process in a single appointment. In some cases, we can also offer a dental crown designed according to the traditional method.
In the article that follows, we answer 5 questions about dental crowns, to allow you to fully understand the nature of this treatment.
What is a dental crown?
A dental crown is a fixed prosthesis, which is intended to cover a tooth. The crown is designed in high quality ceramic and it is hollow in order to fit perfectly over the tooth. To do this, the latter must first be prepared, that is, part of the tooth is removed to create enough space for the crown. Digital impressions of the tooth and surrounding teeth are then taken to create a crown that perfectly fits with the rest of the dentition.
Why use a dental crown?
Dental crowns are used in several situations and to meet different types of dental needs. Here are the most common ones:
- A crown is used to cover a tooth that is damaged, cracked orcollapsed. This makes it possible to solidify the tooth to keep it in the mouth.
- In implantology, a crown can be placed over a dental implant when trying to replace a single tooth, or several teeth that are spaced apart.
- Traditional dental bridges are usually held by two crowns. Up to 4 adjacent teeth can be replaced.
- As a result of a root canal treatment or significant filling, the crown helps to cover and protect the tooth that has been weakened by the treatment.
- A crown can be used for aesthetic purposes, including covering a discolored or malformed tooth.
How do you design and install a dental crown?
Designing a crown with CEREC technology requires a few steps, which usually go as follows:
- The dentist performs an examination, makes a diagnosis, and proposes to his patient the placement of a crown.
- The tooth that is to receive the crown is prepared, and digital impressions are taken of the crown and the place in the mouth where it will be installed.
- The CEREC program designs a 3D model of the crown from digital fingerprints.
- The 3D model is sent to a robotic machining unit, which makes the crown from a high-quality ceramic block. It takes from 30 to 40 minutes.
- The crown is finally put in place and cemented. The dentist makes the final adjustments to ensure comfort and aesthetics.
What are the advantages of CEREC crowns?
We invite you to consult this other article on our blog to discover the advantages of CEREC technology, when compared to the traditional method for the design of dental crowns.
What is the lifespan of the dental crown?
Since the CEREC crown is designed in high-quality ceramic, it usually has an excellent longevity, which is about 10-15 years. The patient should care for it like a natural tooth, either brush it after meals and floss around the crown on a daily basis. A crown can easily be replaced when the time comes to do so, or if it breaks.
