Oral surgery

Oral surgery’s focus is with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the maxillofacial region, (your face and mouth) and of injuries and defects (trauma, genetic, disease-related, etc.) to the teeth and jaws which require surgery to correct.

Although most general dentist perform surgical acts on a weekly/daily basis, oral surgery is a specialty field of dentistry and that specialist is called a maxillofacial surgeon. Since these specialists focus on fixing serious oral health problems, a general dentist may refer patients to such specialist if the need of the patient goes beyond the scope of the dentist’s ability to treat the patient’s condition and / or the knowledge of such condition.
