Did you know that tooth decay is the most common chronic disease in children and adolescents? Unfortunately, there are many myths about tooth decay that can prevent people from getting the treatment they need. In this article, we will debunk three of the most common myths about tooth decay. Keep reading to learn more!
No tooth pain = no tooth decay
Many people believe that a tooth affected by tooth decay will necessarily be painful. However, this is not the case at all. Tooth decay occurs when acids produced by the bacteria in the mouth concentrate on the surface of the teeth. They then create small holes in the enamel of the teeth, which is the protective and outer layer of the dentition. Enamel is therefore the first part of the tooth that is affected. At this stage, it should be noted that tooth decay will likely be asymptomatic, meaning that it will not cause any pain or abnormal symptoms. It is the dentist who can detect it during an examination performed during a routine visit.
Next, the decay will begin to break down the dentin, the layer underlying the enamel. It is only at this stage that the tooth can become more sensitive to hot, cold, and acidic or sugary foods. Even then, it is not certain that the decay will cause pain at this stage. In the absence of treatment, the decay will eventually reach the dental pulp, which is located in the center of the tooth and contains nerves and blood vessels. An infection of the pulp can cause significant pain and requires root canal treatment to be stopped.
So, remember that just because you don't feel anything in your teeth doesn't mean that nasty cavities aren't developing. The only way to be sure is to have your teeth examined by a dentist!
It's not just sugary foods that cause cavities This is another common myth. In fact, foods that contain starch also pose a risk of cavities, even if they don't taste sweet.
Starch is a complex carbohydrate of plant origin. Therefore, it can be found in most starchy foods such as pasta, potatoes, bread, etc. Processed products made from cereals also contain starch, such as crackers or chips. Even though these foods don't taste sweet, they still contain carbohydrates that provide a food source for bacteria. Moreover, starch residues can stick to teeth, increasing the contact between teeth and acids, and therefore the risk of cavities.
The best thing to do is to brush your teeth about 30 minutes after meals and snacks, even if you haven't eaten sweets!
Cavities are harmless
This is completely false! Cavities are relatively benign when they are at an early stage of development, meaning that only the enamel or dentin of the tooth is affected. However, a cavity that has deepened and reached the pulp can cause various complications, such as a painful infection and the formation of an abscess. An abscess is a deep infection resulting in sharp pain and a buildup of pus. Without treatment, the infection can spread to other parts of the body and contribute to the development of cardiovascular or pulmonary diseases. In addition, untreated cavities can lead to the loss of permanent teeth. This is a situation that we try to avoid at all costs!
Remember that regular dental check-ups are the best way to prevent the development of cavities and the associated complications.
