We wanted you to learn more about the use of dental implants in dentistry, while showing you their advantages when compared to other tooth replacement options.
What is a dental implant and how is it installed?
A dental implant acts as an artificial root for a dental crown when there is only one tooth to replace, or as an anchor for a dental bridge, a partial denture or a complete denture when multiple teeth need to be replaced. The implant takes the form of a small screw made of titanium.
The dental implant is installed during surgery to insert the implant into the jawbone. Since titanium is a material that is biocompatible with the human body, it will naturally integrate with the jaw bone in the weeks following the procedure. This process is called osseointegration, which means that new bone cells from around the implant, giving it strength and stability.
Once the site of the procedure is fully healed and the implant is well anchored, then the tooth or replacement teeth can be designed and placed.
Why use dental implants?
Whether aesthetically or functionally, a replacement tooth supported by an implant will perfectly imitate a natural tooth. In addition to giving you a beautiful smile, dental implants help maintain oral health in many ways:
Integrity of the smile: the establishment of a traditional dental bridge requires that the teeth that will be used as pillars to fix the bridge and to prepare the pillars, enamel must be trimmed from the healthy teeth. With dental implants, there is no need for this procedure, which helps to maintain the integrity of the surrounding teeth.
Durability: The steps required for implant placement and integration of the implant into the jaw are spread over several months. However, this expectation is usually rewarded since a dental implant can remain in place for several decades if it is well maintained.
Jaw health: the absence of the roots of a natural tooth in the jaw bone means that the jawbone is no longer stimulated. In time, the jawbone is resorbed and will lose volume. The consequences can be felt as much in the appearance of the face as in the functionalities of the dentition. By putting an implant in place, the jawbone continues to be stimulated and it prevents it from losing volume.
Stability: When properly integrated into the jaw bone, the implant imparts excellent stability to the tooth or replacement teeth. This is reflected by a better ability to chew and a better speech.
