Implantology: The Secrets of Osteointegration

  • December 15, 2020
  • Admin

From a tooth replacement perspective, no treatment option is more beneficial than dental implants. Comfort, stability, durability... These are all advantages associated with dental implantology when comparing  this technique to other options.

But what explains these benefits? It is a process called osteointegration.  In the following article, our team shares the secrets of the latter!

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a small screw made of titanium. During surgery, the implant is inserted directly into the jaw bone. The goal: to use the implant as an artificial root to solidly support a dental restoration. Depending on the number of teeth that need to be replaced, the implants can be used as anchor points for various types of restorations, including crowns, bridges and dentures.

Titanium is the material of choice for dental implants because it is biocompatible with the human body. It is precisely this important aspect that makes possible the osteointregration process

The process of osteointegration

Once an implant is placed in the jaw bone, the surgical site is closed and the healing period follows. The latter usually lasts 3 to 6 months, since we have to wait until the osteointegration is completed.

During this process, new bone cells are created around the implant, precisely because it is designed in a biocompatible material. This means that the implant fuses with the jaw bone during  osteointegration. This is a natural phenomenon and it is the latter that explains the benefits attributed to implantology.

What are the benefits for the patient?

Implantology has really revolutionized the world of dentistry. Indeed, it is a replacement option for missing teeth that has several advantages.

First, as a result of the osteointegration process, the implants are firmly anchored in the jaw bone. For this reason, they allow the dental restoration that go over them to be very stable in the mouth. This avoids dietary restrictions associated with some traditional alternatives. In addition, speech is not hindered by an unstable prosthesis!

Dental implants are also the most durable alternative. Indeed, an implant can remain in place for several decades once the osteointegration is completed. If necessary, the restoration can simply be repaired or replaced without affecting the integrity of the implants that are already in place.
