Brushing your teeth, the right way

  • May 6, 2021
  • Admin

It might seem obvious that brushing your teeth is an important part of your daily routine. However, to take advantage of an effective brushing to eliminate food residues, plaque, and bacteria, you must know how to adopt the right technique. The Dents Mon Quartier team has prepared the following article to share with you the right brushing technique and tips to keep in mind to promote proper dental hygiene.

The technique for brushing teeth

It is important to follow the technique described below. This not only allows for proper cleaning of the teeth, but also protects the enamel from overly aggressive brushing, which could damage it in the long run. In addition, it can also help prevent   gum recession, which can also be linked to an inadequate brushing technique.

Here is the technique to choose from:

  • Hold your brushing at a 45-degree angle.
  • Place the end of the brush hair at the base of the teeth, just under the gum.
  • Make a semi-circular motion, up and down, with a slight pressure.
  • Pay special attention to each tooth and surface (in front of teeth, chewing surface, etc.).

Some important tips related to brushing your teeth.

In addition to applying the right technique, here are some other things you should remember about brushing your teeth.

Taking your time

Brushing your teeth normally takes 2 to 3 minutes. This allows you to take the time necessary to properly brush the entire tooth and dental surfaces.

Brushing after meals and before bedtime

Tooth brushing should be done about 30 minutes after meals. This allows saliva to neutralize the acids in the mouth after eating, to prevent the brushing action from being abrasive for tooth enamel. In addition, brushing just before going to bed should not be forgotten, otherwise bacteria will proliferate inside the mouth throughout the night.

Choose your toothbrush.

There are several types of toothbrushes on the market. To choose yours, there is a big rule to follow: make sure you choose a toothbrush that has soft or extra soft hairs, so that brushing remains soft for the enamel and gums. The rest of the selection criteria for the toothbrush, particularly in relation to the shape and size of the brush, remain personal choices. Just make sure you have a toothbrush that allows for a comfortable brushing.

Do not neglect flossing!

The use of floss is an important and essential part of a good oral hygiene routine. Flossing should be done at least once a day, always before brushing. This removes food residues and bacteria that remain trapped in interdental spaces, so that they are thenremoved  during brushing. In addition, toothpaste can penetrate better between the teeth. We devoted  a full article on our blog to the use of flossing.

For personalized advice on your tooth brushing technique, do not hesitate to ask your dental hygienist on your next visit to the clinic. She will be happy to guide you in the adoption of an optimal hygiene routine!
