Bad breath is an unpleasant phenomenon of life. Although this condition is normal during certain times of the day, such as waking in the morning, it is often annoying and anxious for the person chronically affected. This article is an explanation of the different sources of the condition, and most importantly, what you can do to get rid of your bad breath.
Why do we have bad breath on waking?
During sleep, there is less saliva production. Since saliva is an element that cleans the mouth during normal sleep, debris between teeth begins to break down, causing bad breath. On the other hand, we do not speak of chronic halitosis in this case, but rather of morning breath.
When bad breath is no longer transient and becomes recurrent, it is called chronic halitosis. Many people have this condition that can affect their personal and professional life, so it is important to be well informed to try to counter it.
What are the causes of bad breath?
Bad breath can be caused by a variety of factors, some more important than others:
- Inflammation or infection of the gums may cause bad breath as bacteria emits a smell in the mouth.
- Poor oral hygiene can cause unpleasant odors in addition to other oral health problems.
- The presence of cavities and restorations that are defective.
- The presence of food particles between the teeth.
- Breathing through the mouth, which dry out the mucous membranes of the mouth that cause the production of saliva.
- The consumption of tobacco products as well as the excessive consumption of alcohol products
- The decrease in the production of saliva, also known as "having a dry mouth".
- The accumulation of bacteria on the tongue
- A very rich and spicy food
- Fast weight loss or meal jumping throughout the day
- And finally, a bad or no use of dental floss
What are the medical conditions that can cause bad breath?
- Sinusitis and / or bronchitis
- Tonsillitis or infections of adenoids
- The presence of certain fungi on the tongue (oral candidiasis)
- Chronic diseases: diabetes, liver problems, kidney problems or chronic respiratory problems (COPD)
- The taking of certain drugs which have as a side effect the dryness of the mouth (antipsychotics, antidepressants, decongestants)
