By pairing a good diet with good oral hygiene, you make sure to keep many health problems at bay! For this reason, we think it's important to know the right foods that will keep your smile and body healthy. The Dents Mon Quartier dental clinic invites you to add foods to your daily routine that help prevent cavities and many other oral diseases.
Which foods are good for the health of your teeth?
- Foods rich in fiber: a good example would be celery. The many natural fibers present in this vegetable bring a natural cleaning of the teeth. An apple is also a good example of fruit with a high fiber content. However, it is important to remember that these do not replace the traditional brushing of teeth.
- Foods rich in calcium: we are talking mainly about dairy products. Milk, yogurt and cheese are enhanced with calcium which is good for bones and teeth. Cheese, in addition to providing a good calcium ratio, helps maintain the pH balance of the mouth by neutralizing acids and preventing bacteria from growing. Almonds and tofu are also foods rich in calcium.
- Foods rich in vitamins B and C: vitamin B, which is often present in breads and cereals, is good for maintaining healthy gums when it is combined with vitamin C, which is present in most fruits. We are talking here about kiwis, oranges, peppers, broccoli and kale, for example.
- Foods rich in vitamin D: vitamin D helps the absorption of calcium in the body. This vitamin, which is rarer in food but is rather present in the sun's rays, is also found in eggs and several fish.
- Foods rich in phosphorus: phosphorus helps strengthen teeth enamel while fortifying the jaw and bones. Foods rich in phosphorus are red meat, wheat germ, eggs, sesame seeds and Brazil nuts, for example.
- Cranberries: this small fruit plays an antioxidant role that helps prevent gum disease. On the other hand, it is better to avoid dried ones as they tend to be sweeter and stick to the teeth, which may increase the chances of developing tooth decay. - Green tea and herbal teas: these also bring antioxidants and prevent the formation of plaque on the teeth. Teas can also help control bacteria in the mouth that causes bad breath.
- Water: It is very important to drink plenty of water every day to keep the tissues hydrated. In this way, you can prevent dry mouth, which is the source of many problems in the mouth.
