3 questions about nitrous oxide

Your dentists in LaSalle at the Dents Mon Quartier clinic now offer conscious sedation with nitrous oxide.  This service is offered to children only, as its use is of particular importance in pediatric dentistry. In the following, we explain why and answer 3 common questions that the parents of our young patients frequently ask us about conscious sedation with nitrous oxide.

Conscious nitrous oxide sedation: safe and versatile

At Dents Mon Quartier in LaSalle, we are pleased to have Dr. Eric Chang as head of our pediatric dentistry service. Dr. Chang has extensive experience with children and knows how to provide them with all the care they need for the proper development of their teeth and to maintain their oral health.

Dr. Chang has undergone additional training to provide conscious sedation with nitrous oxide to the children who see him. Thanks to his qualifications, this is done in a very safe way and he knows how to integrate this type of sedation by adapting it to the needs of each child.

Here are the answers to three frequently asked questions about conscious sedation.

  • What is conscious sedation?

When you think of sedation or anesthesia, you associate it with being asleep during a procedure, for example during surgery. However, nitrous oxide allows for so-called "conscious" sedation. It provides a relaxing and well-being effect, but the patient remains conscious. In other words, despite sedation, the patient can continue to follow the dentist's instructions and can cooperate with the care she or he receives.

Nitrous oxide was once called "hilarious gas" because of the euphoria it causes.  In addition, it has an analgesic effect, which is that it helps to control pain by helping to improve the effect of anesthetics.

  • How is it administered?

As part of conscious sedation, nitrous oxide is mixed with oxygen. It is then administered, using a special mask, through the nose. As soon as it starts to be administered, its effects appear quickly. However, when administration is discontinued, the patient returns to his "normal" state in just a few minutes. In addition, there is no period of rest that is necessary as a result of conscious sedation; the child can resume his activities as soon as the appointment is over.

  • Why is its use particularly relevant to children?

First, it should be noted that conscious sedation with nitrous oxide helps young patients have a positive experience after their visit to the dentist.   Its use at an early age can therefore help children to adopt a positive attitude towards the dentist.

In addition, the use of conscious sedation allows children to be much more collaborative in their care. This is very relevant in some contexts, particularly among younger people or children with special needs. It should also be noted that nitrous oxide sedation allows the child to lose track of time, for example during more complex or long-term treatments.  It is well known that the patience of young children sometimes hangs by a thread...
