A cleaning, rethought from start to finish
Dental cleanings haven't changed much in fifty years: scrape, polish, rinse. At Dents Mon Quartier, we've adopted a different approach — Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT), a Swiss protocol developed by EMS and now used in thousands of clinics worldwide.
The idea is straightforward: instead of cleaning blind, we make the target visible first. A colour disclosing agent reveals biofilm — the nearly invisible bacterial layer that rebuilds on your teeth every day. Only then do we remove it, using a jet of air, warm water and fine powder rather than metal instruments.
The result is a more targeted clean, a noticeably more comfortable visit, and a far more concrete conversation about the spots your toothbrush keeps missing at home.
What is biofilm — and why does it matter?
Dental biofilm is an organized layer of bacteria that forms continuously on enamel, below the gumline, and around crowns and implants. Left in place, it hardens into calculus and becomes the starting point for most oral health problems:
- Cavities and staining
- Persistent bad breath
- Gingivitis: red, tender gums that bleed when you brush
- Periodontitis: bone loss, gum recession, loose teeth
- Complications around implants (mucositis, peri-implantitis)
Research also links chronic periodontal inflammation to broader health conditions, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Managing biofilm is a health decision, not just a cosmetic one.
What happens during your GBT appointment
The GBT protocol has eight steps, performed in the same order every visit. That consistency is the point — nothing is left to chance or to the mood of the day.
- Assess — We examine teeth, gums, restorations and implants.
- Disclose — A disclosing agent stains the biofilm so it becomes visible.
- Motivate and educate — We look at what the dye revealed together and adjust your home routine around your actual risk areas.
- AIRFLOW® — A jet of air, warm water and fine erythritol powder (a sweet-tasting sugar alcohol) removes biofilm, coffee, tea and tobacco stains, and early calculus. No metal contact.
- PERIOFLOW® — For deeper periodontal pockets, a soft nozzle cleans below the gumline where conventional instruments struggle to reach.
- PIEZON® PS — If hardened calculus remains, a slim ultrasonic instrument removes it in a minimally invasive way.
- Check — Final verification that nothing is left behind. Fluoride applied if indicated.
- Recall — We set a follow-up interval that fits your risk profile — not an automatic "see you in six months."
A GBT appointment generally takes about as long as a regular cleaning. Exact time depends on how much buildup is present and on your periodontal status.
Is GBT right for you?
The protocol adapts to nearly every profile. It's especially welcome if:
- You dislike the scraping sensation. This is the number one reason our patients ask for GBT.
- You have sensitive teeth or gums. Warm water, gentle powder, low pressure.
- You wear braces, a retainer or orthodontic appliances. The jet reaches around hardware that instruments can't navigate.
- You have implants, crowns, veneers or bridges. PLUS powder is designed to clean these surfaces without scratching them, unlike metal instruments.
- You're in periodontal treatment or maintenance. PERIOFLOW® targets residual pockets precisely.
- You drink coffee, tea or red wine. Surface stains lift off with the jet.
- You feel anxious about dental visits. Less high-pitched noise, less vibration, less pressure.
GBT suits children and seniors alike. Some conditions call for an adjusted protocol or a different powder — we'll go over that at your assessment.
Why GBT at Dents Mon Quartier
Our LaSalle clinic, at the corner of Newman Boulevard and Viola-Desmond Street, has invested for years in technology that makes care more precise and more comfortable: CEREC for same-day crowns, VELscope for screening, digital X-rays, diode laser. GBT fits that same logic exactly.
Dr. Joumana Charouk's team is trained in the full protocol. And because GBT makes biofilm visible, every cleaning doubles as a teaching moment: you leave knowing precisely where to focus your effort.
Frequently asked questions about GBT cleaning
Does it hurt?
The vast majority of patients describe GBT as significantly more comfortable than traditional scaling. The water is warm, the powder is very fine, and there is no metal scraping against the enamel. If you have very sensitive teeth, you may experience a slight cooling or tingling sensation.
What is the difference between GBT and a regular dental cleaning?
A traditional dental cleaning relies primarily on scaling instruments and polishing with a rubber cup. GBT begins by revealing the biofilm with a disclosing agent, then removes it using a stream of air, water, and fine powder. Ultrasonic instruments are used only for any remaining hardened tartar. The protocol follows a standardized sequence and is less abrasive to enamel and dental restorations.
Does GBT whiten teeth?
No. GBT is not a teeth whitening treatment. It removes surface stains caused by coffee, tea, wine, and tobacco, restoring your teeth to their natural colour. If you would like your teeth to be lighter than their natural shade, a professional whitening treatment is required.
Is GBT covered by my insurance?
GBT is a professional dental cleaning method and is billed using the same preventive care and scaling codes as a standard cleaning. Coverage depends on your dental insurance plan. Our team can verify your benefits before your appointment.
Is GBT safe for dental implants or veneers?
Yes—in fact, this is one of its key advantages. The protocol uses a powder specifically designed for cleaning around dental implants and restorations, where metal instruments may pose a risk of scratching the surface.
How often should I have GBT?
The recommended frequency depends on your individual risk factors, including tartar buildup, gum health, smoking, diabetes, and the presence of dental implants. Step 8 of the GBT protocol is specifically designed to determine your personalized maintenance interval.
Can I have GBT if I have gum disease?
Yes. GBT is an integral part of periodontal treatment and maintenance. Depending on your condition, it may be combined with our non-surgical gum disease treatment.
