Orthodontics at all stages of life

  • October 8, 2018

Many believe that orthodontic treatments are just for young patients, children or teenagers. Although it is true that people in these age groups are more likely to wear braces or other orthodontic appliances, do not be fooled! Indeed, it is never too late to correct the misalignment of the teeth, occlusion of the jaws or a dental malposition.

In the following post, we explain the relevance of an orthodontic consultation at different stages of life and potentially undertaking this treatment!

Orthodontics: beyond a more aesthetic smile

You probably know that orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that aims to correct the alignment of teeth or straighten them, in the case of an occlusion problem. Occlusion refers to the relationship between the upper jaw and the lower jaw, and therefore, the way the upper teeth fit with the lower teeth when closing the mouth.

Of course, we will first think of aesthetic disadvantages when it comes to misaligned teeth, but it would be wrong to believe that these are the only inconveniences. Misaligned teeth are usually more difficult to clean properly, making them more prone to developing problems such as tooth decay or gum disease. In addition, these teeth are more likely to wear prematurely.

When the jaws are misaligned (occlusion problems), chewing abilities may be affected. Dysfunction in the joints of the jaws may appear, causing discomfort and pain.

Thus, orthodontic treatment is often undertaken preventively, that is, before the problems mentioned above become apparent. That is why it is relevant to consult in orthodontics if you believe that your teeth are misaligned, and this, whatever your age!

Children and orthodontics

A first orthodontic consultation is usually recommended for children around the age of seven. At this stage, the dentition is in full development and the dentist will be able to evaluate the young patient's teeth and jaws to detect any problem that could cause harm in the future. We then aim to intercept the problem by different treatment options.

It is important to note that treatments initiated at this young age are generally less complex to perform, which may result in lower costs.

Teens and orthodontics

Adolescence is, in many cases, the ideal time to start orthodontic treatment. At this stage, the permanent dentition is well developed enough to be able to detect any problem. Nevertheless, as the teeth and jaws still have good growth potential at this stage of life, one can still correct a problem of alignment of the teeth or occlusion of the jaws.

While teenagers may be reluctant to wear braces or other orthodontic appliances, it is important to know that modern techniques allow us to treat more discreetly than was the case in the past. One can for example use pins whose boxes match well with the natural color of the teeth, rather than metal cases which remain more visible.

Adults and orthodontics

Adults can also take orthodontic treatment to get a smoother, healthier smile. Nowadays, there are several treatment options that combine efficiency, comfort and discretion. Think of the Invisalign technology, which is based on the use of a series of transparent and removable 3D printed trays to correct the alignment of the teeth. Patients can undergo their orthodontic treatment without having to change their lifestyle and it does not appear as much as traditional braces when they smile.

Note that there are several orthodontic treatment options. Depending on your needs, your oral condition, your expectations and your budget, Dr Joumana Charouk and her team from the Dents Mon Quartier dental clinic in LaSalle will be able to offer you the most appropriate treatment!
