A healthy smile requires a good oral hygiene routine, but also adopting good lifestyle habits. Sometimes we do harmful things that seem trivial to us, and sometimes we neglect others that are important for oral health. Concerned about allowing you to keep all your teeth and a smile of which you are proud, the Dents Mon Quartier team presents below some mistakes and habits to avoid in order to preserve your oral health.
# 1 Not flossing regularly
We know we are annoying with this but flossing daily is important. It allows you to dislodge food residues, but also dental plaque that forms in the interdental space. These represent a third of the surface of the teeth. So, if you neglect flossing, it is as if you are neglecting to clean 33% of your smile…
Sometimes, people who start flossing again notice slight bleeding of their gums and then stop flossing. It is rather a sign that you need to persevere with dislodging regularly the bacteria that may cause gum inflammation. After a few days, the bleeding should stop. Otherwise, we advise you to consult because persistent bleeding from gums is one of the first signs of periodontal disease.
# 2 Using your teeth to open packages
Bottle, pack of chips, envelope... We all have opened something with our teeth. Although this gesture may seem innocuous and harmless, it presents an increased risk of causing a crack or even a dental fracture. Thus, it is better to make a small effort to take a pair of scissors or the appropriate tool rather than opening a package, or anything else, with your teeth!
#3 Smoking
Smoking and consuming tobacco in all its forms is directly linked to an increased risk of suffering from a plethora of oral problems. Smokers, for example, expose themselves gum disease, since the smoke reduces oxygenation of the gums, which makes them more vulnerable to inflammation and infections. Smoking also increases the risk of oral cancer by up to 20 times. And that is not to mention aesthetic problems, such as the yellowing of the teeth, or even the alteration of taste and smell.
# 4 Not seeing the dentist at the recommended frequency
Finally, people shouldn’t believe that we should see the dentist only when we have pain or a problem. Nowadays, dentistry has aims that are above all preventive. By seeing the dentist regularly, one receives a professional cleaning to prevent the accumulation of tartar, in addition to a complete examination, carried out by the dentist. He or she may then diagnose any problem quickly in order to use a simpler and less invasive treatment.
Without frequent visits to the dental clinic for routine check-ups and cleaning, one is exposed to oral diseases, which can evolve slowly to cause serious problems. A visit is generally recommended every 6 to 12 months, depending on each person's needs. For more information, make an appointment with the Dents Mon Quartier team now!
